The mashTape
Songbird isn’t designed for searching. It’s designed to load tracks and artists. On the plus side, searching is possible in mashTape by clicking the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner. This will take you to a search screen, which has all the same functionality as the traditional Songbird search. However, mashTape shares the same window as Songbird, so you can still see your music while you’re searching.
Songbird also allows you to search from the Songbird file browser. To do so, right-click a song and select Search or use the + sign at the top of the window to search. This window shows the music files from the current directory.
MashTape’s search results are quite impressive. It supports music results from Last.fm, Musicbrainz, and Discogs. The highlights:
Last.fm results are of the highest quality, with podcasts, podcasts, and downloads available.
Discogs allows you to add artists to a watch list.
Musicbrainz allows you to create custom playlists of artists.
MashTape includes the ability to browse artists and albums and add them to playlists.
Now, as I write this, I realize that MashTape only has a limited number of results. The good news is that MashTape does a good job at notifying you about this problem. Also, msearch.com is an outstanding service that allows you to add the various search engines for Songbird, including MashTape.

Adding to Shai’s answer, upon further testing for these I have found that the best search engine for Songbird and music in general is a webapp called Last.fm.
With this app, you can create a profile and add various songs and albums to it. You can also add friends (make it easier to locate your music collection for those friends) and generate playlists.
The main downside is that this app requires you to have an account with Last.fm.
Another nice add-on for Songbird is msearch.com. It’s similar to last.fm, but doesn’t require an account.
One final add-on is moomoo.com. It’s very similar to msearch.com, but you don’t need to register an account. You can create playlists and automatically add songs and albums to them.

I like it because it makes it easier to find the music I like. I’m not sure how much this extension adds (for me).

This extension doesn’t work on mashTape Music Library. I realize this has been discussed at least as far back as July of 2011 (except for the limited number of thumbs downs). SaaS’s are not necessarily cheap, so I wish that they could include a full version of their product.
P.S. – The artwork for mashTape is not a mash up of the lyrics. Most lyrics are written in capital letters.
P.P.S. – I have tried many different ways to figure out how to get the extension to work correctly. Basically it tells me to go to which contains the error “the server at www.mymashtape.com can’t be found.” If anyone is interested please see this link:
P.P.P.S. – You would think that after having been contacted about this for over a year that MashTape would have resolved this.

The functionality is inspired by the paper I wrote for the Webtrack presentation at IADIS 2007, “Juggling podcast listeners with m0n0.ph”. It works by maintaining the current state of the ArtStack in Songbird and watching for changes to current song.
It was most certainly inspired by Twitter and would be very interesting to see it implemented as a native component of the Twitter Browser.
Notes: Requires: Songbird 0.7.1 or later and the plugin for 0.7.1.

If you really want to do it yourself just make a small bookmarklet/button that records you and your friend’s song in the local history.
Add to bookmark bar, single click, and Songbird will go into cloud mode and save it.
Then, single click the button to get the media browser.
You can do this in JS or onclick using a tag.
