Every four years, voters across the country get to vote for new members of the U.S. Senate. And each year, one of the 435 at-large members is elected. That senator then represents all 50 states, regardless of their size.
There’s a lot of guesswork involved in who those at-large members will be in 2016. Some say the election will reflect the states’ relative sizes and the types of issues it will be particularly important to handle, from immigration reform to healthcare.
With the exception of two people, every state has one or two at-large members. Maine has two, and its senators, Sen. Angus King and Sen. Mike E. Crapo, belong to the so-called bipartisan “Gang of Eight,” a group made up of four Republicans and four Democrats that was instrumental in crafting immigration reform.
Texas is unusual in that it has no at-large senator at all. At-large members typically represent people who live in urban areas. The list below is intended to guide you in your online search for 2016 at-large congressional candidates.
The Open Seat: Maine
The at-large seat is one of the longest-tenured seats in the Senate. Maine will probably nominate Rep. Chellie Pingree for the job. It would be the sixth time that Pingree, a Democrat, has run.
