Introduction I designed eyeBeam simply because I want to have my own packet-based protocol for supporting T.38 protocol. What is the idea behind it? Generally speaking, it will be based on the following assumptions: 1. T.38 SIP packet protocol. 2. Voice is always transferred over the mobile subscriber line (M-line) as PNNI 3. Voice is always transferred over the M-line as ISDN and ISUP ( and 4. ISUP is always realized over M-line as well as PNNI. The above-mentioned scenarios are possible with the VoIP service via T.38, and a packet-based protocol is very important. Most of existing packet-based protocols are designed for the Internet, and are not so appropriate to support an ISDN environment. These protocols are, for example, Adaptive Multi-rate Transport (AMR), Secure Real-time Transport (SRTP), Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), etc. Therefore, eyeBeam is designed for the Internet, and the network operator is responsible for the provision of ISDNs, mobile subscriber lines, and so on. In order to support T.38 protocol over M-line, the PNNI control signalling is used. M-line is a radio line in PNNI, and T.38 (i.e., VoIP) is realised over PNNI. For IP/M-line interworking with the T.38 protocol, ISUP signalling will be used for the support of ISDN services. With T.38, it is possible to access to the packet-based (i.e., packet transport) VoIP services with the M-line, and it is also possible to access to the packet-based VoIP services with the ISDN. Actually, it is possible to provide the T.38 protocol services via the packet-based VoIP services in the case of using the ISDN. The advantage of using the T.38 protocol in the packet-based VoIP services with the M-line is as follows: – is it possible to exchange with the T.38 VoIP protocol on the M-line (i.e., PNNI) with the existing ISUP signalling (i.e., M-line) – all-IP/M-line interworking
