First of all, I’ve been playing them for over twenty years now. I started with Dragon Quest VI (a NES version of the original game) when I was still in elementary school. I bought Dragon Quest IX as soon as it came out in the States and started playing that. As my tastes grew stronger, the series became less appealing and I let it fall away from my life. I didn’t think much about the series until I got back into it through Dragon Quest XI. This latest game feels like a rebirth of sorts. The story is simple enough that I can follow it and it wasn’t too long, but it was also enjoyable enough to hold my attention without forcing me to play it for hours on end. I know very little about this world and I felt like I was being taken on a journey where I learned more and more about it as the story progressed. I also really liked the fact that they didn’t define character classes by means of statistics. Instead, they simply created a character, so you can customize your appearance and skill set on your own terms. There is a heavy emphasis on story and dialogue. You’ll spend a lot of your time talking with NPCs as the story progresses. The music and voices are great and add a lot to the overall atmosphere of the game. I couldn’t get enough of it. I felt like I was transported to a different world. There are still heaps of sidequests and optional content, but I didn’t find those to be a necessity. Some people do, but I just want to come and play the main story and leave afterwards. I’d be perfectly fine with it if you removed those. The combat takes place in real-time, so there are no turn-based battles as in previous entries in the series. Each time you are attacked by an enemy, your party will start a turn. You can move your characters around the battlefield on it, but you won’t be able to attack or cast spells. You’ll receive damage from enemies in real time, so your enemies need to be at range when they attack. The combat system is simple enough that it doesn’t feel frustrating or overly difficult.
