With the CSX SD50, a simple change from blue to maroon livery made a world of difference. The addition of the CSX logo, along with the ‘CSX’ legend on the cab, and also the removal of the ‘DAT’ legend, made the livery look almost as if it was produced by a different manufacturer. The CSX SD50 originated in Cleveland, and was the first high-speed diesel locomotive to use in regular service, generating over four times the horsepower of its predecessor, and providing superior braking performance. The addition of dynamic brakes at a reasonable price, along with the greater fuel economy of the SD50, meant that this model took off, initially for commuter use. CSX bought three thousand SD50s to replace ageing GE P42ACs, and later, to provide light commuter and rapid freight service, and by 1967, these locomotives were the mainstay of the East Coast, and made their way West. The GEC C25 was derived from the SD50 by EMD, with greater use of aluminium in the body frame and other components, with an EMD 16-71 model used as the basis of the production model. The distinctive curved nose body and smoother surfaces were later seen in the SD70M, which created a niche for the fleet between mainline freight and branchline service. These locomotives are referred to as ‘the Maroon of the Rails’. When it was announced that the new in-cab instrumentation would utilise a display with alphanumeric code, rather than the standard bar graphic, the general opinion was that this would be a tough sell, as the one-digit reference was frequently forgotten, and that more information would be lost. In the 1980s, the SD40-2 brought to the market a fully digitised cab, which may have put pressure on the SD50 cab, but more than compensated for this with its smoother surfaces and better exterior styling. The SD70M and SD70MACs also brought a further step up in the external styling, with better interiors, and high-visibility orange.
