Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

AutoCAD is the third major CAD product from Autodesk. After the release of the first CAD product, Drafting & Annotation System (DAS), in 1982, Autodesk introduced two later versions, Architectural Desktop (1987) and Electrical Desktop (1993). Both were major upgrades of DAS, with the later version being a significant improvement. Architectural Desktop added architectural design capabilities, such as dimensioning, and Electrical Desktop added electrical, piping, and mechanical design capabilities. AutoCAD, introduced in December 1982, was a leap ahead of its two predecessors, with a completely different approach. It was designed to be an all-purpose desktop CAD application, much like Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint today.

AutoCAD first launched as AutoCAD I, with the first major release as AutoCAD II in 1983. In 1994, AutoCAD 3D was introduced as the next major release, with a 3D capability.

In the late 1990s, the desktop version of AutoCAD was moved to the Autodesk Network to replace the original DAS version. The architectural and electrical desktop applications were discontinued and were merged into AutoCAD with the introduction of AutoCAD 2000 in November 1999. With the introduction of AutoCAD 2007 in November 2004, all versions of AutoCAD were released on the Internet, and AutoCAD software was made available to users through a web browser instead of requiring a local program.

On April 9, 2015, Autodesk announced the removal of AutoCAD 2015 software from the Autodesk App Store and the Autodesk Developer Network, allowing users to download the software from other third-party developer sites. The application will be removed from the App Store and from the Autodesk Developer Network on or before October 29, 2015. In the announcement, Autodesk stated that the developer community had been offered an opportunity to transition their existing AutoCAD 2015 software licenses to be compatible with the new release.

AutoCAD 2016, Autodesk’s fifth major release of AutoCAD and the successor to AutoCAD 2015, was released on August 1, 2015. This new version introduced a number of new features, including inking and markup capabilities, offline rendering, and a new subscription program. In addition, AutoCAD 2016 introduced a new user interface (UI), along with the use of keyboard shortcuts and a new ribbon interface for easier navigation. The 2016 edition

AutoCAD also includes a Help Browser and an online Help forum. AutoCAD has over 160 industry-specific help topics on the Application Center web portal.

The User Guide is also available on-line from Autodesk.

AutoCAD was originally developed by John Warnock at Harris Graphics in Almaden, California, and released on the Macintosh in 1986. The first Windows version was released on March 31, 1989.

On February 3, 2014, Autodesk announced that it would acquire the company, which it refers to as “The future of BIM and CAD in today’s connected world”. The company changed its name from “Autodesk” to “Autodesk Inc.”. Autodesk purchased Autodesk for $3.9 billion, along with another $800 million in assumed liabilities. The deal closed on April 4, 2014.

On March 25, 2017, Autodesk acquired VizPro, a cloud-based collaborative CAD platform, which was later rebranded as Autodesk 360.

Reception and applications
In 1998, Autodesk was ranked the 4th fastest-growing company in the Fortune 500. In 2007 Autodesk was ranked the 47th fastest-growing company in the United States, up from the 898th position in 2003, after achieving annual revenue of $3.2 billion, $0.8 billion in net income, and $1.8 billion in free cash flow.

In the third quarter of 2019, Autodesk finished the year as the largest software company in the U.S. with quarterly revenue of $2.26 billion.

Autodesk also manufactures software for related industries such as aerospace, civil engineering, home and building automation, industrial engineering, and multimedia.

AutoCAD was also used by Numerix, makers of a statistical software package, in the development of its 3D statistical analysis program, Numerix Stats.

AutoCAD is used in a wide variety of industries, including:
Oil & Gas
Power Generation
Product Design
Public Works

Third-party plugin support
The following software products provide plugins to extend AutoCAD functionality.
