Pied Kingfisher

The Pied Kingfisher (Gauripis picata) is an uncommon species of bird in the family Alcedinidae. It is endemic to the Western Ghats.

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist montane forests. It is threatened by habitat loss.

KCNJ2 mutation in a Danish family with Bartter syndrome.
Bartter syndrome, characterized by hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis and hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism, is a rare hereditary disorder caused by renal tubular resistance to angiotensin-II (AII) and which may be inherited in an autosomal dominant or recessive way. We describe here a Danish family with a homozygous mutation in the KCNJ2 gene encoding the inward rectifier potassium channel Kir3.1. The proband’s parents, four half-siblings and her brother were clinically unaffected. All were heterozygous for the same missense mutation, c.1027C>T (p.Ala344Val), predicted to change the amino acid charge from positive to negative and located within the C-terminal pore-forming domain of the channel. The mutation segregated with the disease in the family, was absent in 50 Danish control individuals and was absent or present in the proband’s parents. In conclusion, we present a novel genetic defect causing Bartter syndrome in a Danish family./*
