Univariate analyses showed that the following factors were significantly related to PFS: female gender, adverse past history, central nervous system location and visceral metastasis, and brain and liver metastasis. In multivariate analyses, the following factors were significant independent PFS predictors: female gender, adverse past history, central nervous system location, and liver metastasis. The following factors were significant independent overall survival (OS) predictors: female gender, liver metastasis, and grade 3 non-haematological toxicities. Female gender was the only significant factor in multivariate analysis for both PFS and OS. When comparing the effects of prognostic factors using the interaction term in multivariate analysis, the only statistically significant interaction was between gender and metastasis location. Female gender was a strong predictor of poor PFS and OS, irrespective of the presence or absence of visceral metastasis. In HER-2-expressing tumours, the prognostic value of the predictive factors varied according to location of metastasis.
