First scene will be an Antarctic experience which will allow students to put on the virtual reality headset and enter the world of the Antarctic. The scenario begins where scientist will introduce the topic and explain the reasoning for their presence, their significance with the ecology, and what are some of the activities that take place. She will then tell you to take a photo of a penguin for research purposes. There will be different resources given to the student staggered throughout the experience to see their intuitiveness of the setting and their grasping of the resources regarding problem-solving. The introduction will be a blend of science and geography, and the experience will allow the students to get a first-hand feel into a day in the life of an Antarctic scientist. ZHEROS has a fascinating history. After being part of the Canary Islands (nowadays: the region of the Canaries) for many centuries, the native population was nearly wiped out during the conquest by the Moors (which started in 1415), then revived with the arrival of Genoese in 1450. But these communities soon succumbed to the wave of oppression and persecution that the colonial regime unleashed from the 17th century onwards on the islands, when Carthaginians were expelled in 1411 and those Canarians and Moorish who did not comply were executed. Around half of the Zarceros population was enslaved, and “tanned” with a mixture of cow’s blood and sandalwood powder [1].
In the 19th century ZHEROS became the main point of arrival of the Isletana – larger ships from the fleet of the P&O company [2]. The blockading of the port by the American fleet led to the building of the famous lighthouse of Agüergol, which can be seen today from all the north-western and north-eastern coasts of ZHEROS. In 1914, at the time of their emancipation, the Dominican Republic and the Puerto Rican island of Puerto Rico asked the military junta that ruled then (the so called “Republic of the Canaries”) to allow the creation of the “Cuna de Tierra”. The request was granted but the territory remained militarily blocked by FALABREEZ, the base of the US Naval Air Forces which still maintains the territory today.
Finally, the situation exploded in 1940 when the 3 isolated populations of ZHEROS, TART and CYCASE were ‘liberated’ by the troops of General BLES and the Zarceros-CYCASE Mutual Allies’ Brigades. But 20,000 people lost their lives in and around the Canaries, because the oppressed finally had its own freedom [3].
In the 1960s, 2 politicians from the Christian Democracy (Democrazia Cristiana), Ma Aracelli (who had left ZHEROS for Calviá to finish her studies) and Manuel Sánchez (who had also studied in ZHEROS) started working on the historical reconstruction of the Canaries, because they thought that time had come to recover a past which had been still silenced since the first colonial conquest: “the Home of the History of Portuguese Canaries”
